An examination of the jesus christ figure with comparisons to harry potter, and other literary characters (mostly ancient) as well as an substantial amount of history of early christianity. I would have liked more harry potter and literary criticism with less jesus christ and history but it's a good book on jesus and the formation of christianity.
A good critique of the apocalyptic and utopia thinking found within religion and politics even if the writing and realist philosophy of the author seem to embody many of the ideas being criticised.
The English translation disappoints me starting from the title 'Whatever' which no doubt gets some people to pick the book up I'm sure but it means nothing in relation to the novel. This is a depressingly familiar mirror of live and society which is nice to read when you feel disappoint waking up everyday.
Some powerful idea presented elegantly and succinctly. Quite a few clever religious and mythic allusions. No idea what all the numbers are about; I'm not messing around and staring at them until apophenia comes.
TL:DR I like Melville's writing but I'm not reading such a long, slow novel filled with every fine detail of an antiquated niche industry.
